Vital Records - Jamaica: Local History & Genealogy Resource Guide - Research Guides at Library of Congress
Civil Registration began in 1878. Parish and District clerks were mandated to record births and deaths and in 1880, marriage records. Prior to these years, all registers containing transcripts of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, and burials were retained by the Anglican Church, which date back to 1664.

The Government as compared to the church, began to keep records of births, deaths and marriages. The originals of the Jamaican records are held in the Registrar General's Department in Spanish Town, Jamaica, however the LDS Church (Mormon) has filmed these records.
